Privacy and cookie policy

Last updated: 4 October 2026

ClearCar is built to need as little data as possible. This page explains what is stored in your browser, what our server processes, and your rights under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy rules on cookies.

Cookies and storage on your device

ClearCar sets no cookies, neither its own nor any from third parties. It uses no analytics, advertising, social media plugins, tracking pixels or fingerprinting. That's why there is no cookie banner.

The one thing ClearCar can store in your browser is the Recently rated list in the Compare section, and only after you switch on Remember on this device. With the switch off (the default), the list exists only in the open tab and is gone when you close it.

NameTypePurposeDurationLegal basis
clearcar:recent:v1Browser storage (localStorage), ClearCar onlyRemembers up to 8 adverts you rated (portal, title, and the advert link or the car data read by the bookmarklet) so you can compare them, also across tabs.Until you switch Remember off, press Clear list or clear this site's data in your browser. It has no automatic expiry and reaches our server only when you pick an entry to compare.Stored only at your explicit request, which Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive allows as strictly necessary for a feature you ask for. Switching it on is also your consent.

To stop and delete it, switch off Remember on this device in the Compare section: the saved list is deleted at once. You can also delete it in your browser's settings for this site.

Car photos and other websites

To show an advert's photo, your browser loads it directly from the portal's image server (AutoScout24, mobile.de, Carvago, Sauto/Seznam, Bazoš or TipCars). As with any web request, that server learns your IP address and browser type. We tell your browser not to send which page you came from, and at the date above these image servers set no cookies. The portal's own privacy policy applies to that request.

When you paste a link, our server fetches the advert from the portal itself, so the portal sees our server, not you. The ClearCar bookmarklet runs in your browser on the advert you're viewing and sends only the car's details to your ClearCar tab, never the seller's phone number or e-mail or the VIN.

ClearCar loads no scripts, fonts or other content from third parties.

What our server processes

Connecting to the site

To deliver pages and prevent abuse, our server necessarily sees your IP address. For rating requests it keeps the address in memory only, to limit how many requests one address can make per minute, and discards it within a few minutes. The server's technical log records the time, page and result of each request without your IP address.

Anonymous log of ratings

For each rating we keep: the time, whether a link or the bookmarklet was used, the section of the page and the language, the outcome, the portal and advert ID, the car's make, model, year, mileage, price and fuel, the rating, and how long it took. To count visitors per day we store a code derived from your IP address with a random key that exists only in memory and changes every day, so the code can't be turned back into your address or linked across days. We don't store IP addresses or what you pasted. Entries are deleted after 180 days.

Purposes and legal basis: running the service securely, preventing abuse and improving ClearCar (for example, learning which portals and cars people rate). This is our legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

We don't sell or share this data and don't use it for advertising. Our hosting provider processes it on our behalf under a data processing agreement.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure and restriction of processing, the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests, and the right to data portability where it applies.

Because the log contains no IP addresses and the daily code can't be traced back, we usually cannot tell which entries are yours (Article 11 GDPR). If you give us details that identify an entry, such as the advert and when you rated it, we'll handle your request.

You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU country where you live or work or where you believe the infringement took place.
